What color is each subject? Student’s share their take on the current social media trend.

A current trend on social media is the conversation of what core subject in school relates to which color. The trend looks at math, science, history, religion, English, and language classes. Whether it’s because of the color of your notebooks, what emotions you feel during these subjects or simply because “it is,” this trend has proven that each person has their own preference. Here’s what over 50 McNicholas students have to say.

Math is one of the most debated subjects. Over 56% of students said that they think math is red. Coming in second is blue with 31%. Emma Marx, a freshman at McNicholas, states, “Red because it makes me angry.”  But junior Megan Berger states, “Blue, [it] represents strength and it’s hard.”

Most of the responses for science were all similar. Green was the top answer with 82% of people agreeing with orange next with a little over 5%. Kaitlyn Munafo, sophomore, states, “Green. I think that green symbolizes nature and I feel like science is a lot of learning about nature.” Jordan Stropes says, “Orange because it is fun and calming.”

History had a large variety of colors and most of them all had about the same number of votes. Although it was close to even, orange won the vote with 26%. Freshmen Addison Write states, “Blue because blue is the color of water (most of the time) and that geography affects where groups of people settled.” Tori Stewart, freshmen, states, “Orange. That’s just what it has always been for me and because every other class definitely has a color, it just sort of has the left-over color.”

Although not all schools offer religion classes, McNicholas does, and religion had one of the highest numbers of consistent votes for the same color. Purple came in first with over 50%. Freshmen Lincoln Conrady states, “Religion is purple because the advent candles represent the weeks of Christmas.”

Next in votes was yellow with almost 30%. Stewart states, “Yellow, because yellow feels like a spiritual color to me since God is associated with light and light is often drawn yellow.”

English had a wide variety of colors but blue and yellow both tied for with exactly 33.9%. Freshman Maryn Minnich states, “Blue, it is a calm color and reminds me of reading.” Freshman Kiera Norton states, “Yellow, because of pencils.”

Last comes language classes like Spanish and French. Orange received the most votes with 28%. Next was red with 18%. Sophomore Megan Berger states, “Orange, orange makes me think of traveling.” Spanish teacher, Mrs. Tracy Canisalez states, “When I think of the Spanish language, I think of the color red (and yellow), because it’s the color of the Spanish flag.”

Although most people did not have a reason for the color they chose, the few that did said it was because something related to the subject was the color. Most people just relate colors to subjects because it’s what they’ve used since they were kids.
