Social media’s impact on students

Social media is incredibly popular with teens. Most teens tend to use social media frequently, distracting them from everyday activities. Schools have grown in their concern of social media’s influence on student work quality.

At McNicholas, there is not a set policy about the use of social media at school. However, many teachers collect cell phones during classes to combat the growing use of social media throughout a teen’s day.

Freshman, Payton Detzel states, “It definitely does impact schoolwork. I think it’s because people would rather watch videos then do homework.” When observing study halls, students are often seen on their phones doing just that.

However, students feel frustrated with the stigma that phones are always the problem. Freshman, Riley Sharp states, “My mom always acts like every little issue is because of my phone and I guess some things could be but it’s not always.”  Small things like cleaning a room, doing household chores, and schoolwork can be difficult with the distractions of social media.

Freshman Jamison Sublet explains that she does see a difference in schoolwork when she doesn’t use social media when she’s working. “Sometimes when I’m not using my phone while doing homework, I’m less distracted. I don’t see a difference then but when Ii get the work back the grades are always better,” states Sublet.

Freshman, Payton Detzel states, “It definitely does impact schoolwork. I think it’s because people would rather watch videos then do homework.”

According to the students interviewed, social media does impact things throughout the everyday lives of teenagers. School work is at the top of the list due to the distracting, addictive videos.
