McNicholas clubs offer interests for all students

For the 2024 school year, the selection of clubs at McNicholas High School has expanded thanks to the help from students contributing their ideas and interests for possible new clubs.

“Investment Club, Mario Smash Brothers Club, Fitness Club, Liturgy Choir, and Yearbook Photo Club are all new clubs this year that I recommend looking at,” Club moderator, teacher, and Math Department Chair Mrs. Ashley Brothers said. There are over 30 clubs at McNick now and students had the chance to preview and sign up on interest sheets during the Club Fair in the first few weeks of school.

With the continuous rise of clubs at McNick, students can find something that they like and can learn more about, with a club that every student of every interest can find.

“Spike Ball, Pickleball, Ice-skating, and Fitness Club are all clubs that seem to interest our student athletes the most,” Brothers said. But there are many other non-athletic clubs too.

Sophomore Payton Detzel said, “I really like Cooking Club. I like that we get to make different things and would really recommend it to incoming freshmen.”

Not only are there clubs that can help you learn new skills, but there are ones that make an impact on other people’s lives too. St. Vincent de Paul Society is one of the biggest clubs at McNick . Junior Natalie Cox said, “I’d say the best part about being in SVDP is that I get to work with my friends and classmates towards a collective goal of helping others who need it.” Not only can you help others, but you can gain service hours by joining clubs that serve others.

“SVDP helps our neighbors in need. Those needs can vary quite a bit. It might be providing kids with school supplies, or fun Halloween experiences for kids in the West End and older adults at a nearby nursing home, or warm clothes for people in the winter, or stocking food at a local food pantry.  Most of us have so much, and some people have very little.  It is a way to imitate Jesus who noticed the needs of others and helped satisfy those needs,” Theology teacher and SVDP Club moderator Deacon Pete Caccavari said.

Another club available for students is the Rockets for Life Club. Moderator and Spanish teacher Tracey Canisalez said, “Students in Rockets for Life learn to be aware, pray and be pro-active defenders of life issues within our nation. In their daily life, students learn to recognize opportunities to help those in need within their families and communities.”

Many club moderators recommend that all students should try at least one club during their time at McNick.

To find a club, students can find the list at https://www.mcnhs.org/student-life/clubs and anyone who wishes to join a club should contact Mrs. Brothers via email so she can complete the registration.

Mountain biking club started last year in 2023-2024 and is back for McNicholas students to join.
