Golf, Tennis wrap up and move into tournaments

The McNicholas Rockets Men’s Varsity Golf Team, Women’s Varsity Golf Team, and Women’s Varsity Tennis Team are either finished with their seasons or are getting ready to head into tournament play.

The Men’s Varsity Golf Team is coached by Mr. Jim Gilligan. He said the boys show great effort, and even though there is always room for improvement, they are always trying to lift each other up every single time they practice or are in matches.  Gilligan said the team had multiple tournaments this year and that they did improve their overall tournament score with each one. Gilligan added, “The team really shows great sportsmanship and pride for McNick, always bonding together and showing great etiquette on the course.”

The toughest competition the team faced was against Mariemont in a match where the Rockets won by one stroke. One of the biggest highlights from this past season for the boys was sophomore Nolan Ey making a hole in one during a match against Milford. Their first tournament was The Hadley at Glenview, where they shot a 325 combined and came 11th out of 20 at this tournament. The next tournament was the GCL at Walden Ponds and over two days they finished 4th with senior Jack Noone making first team GCL with a one over par finish both days. The final tournament was Sectionals at Glenview, where the team shot a combined score of 327, which was the second best they did all year in tournaments. Unfortunately, they did not move on from Sectionals. The final match was King of the Hill at Coldstream against Turpin and Anderson.

The Women’s Varsity Golf Team’s season is coming to a close and the team is heading into tournament play.  Their coach, Taylor Stott, said, “This season went really well! We graduated six seniors last year and welcomed five new players this year: four freshman and one sophomore. We only have one senior this year, so we are a young team with immense potential.”

Senior Captain Ava Wille said, “This team has been better than the teams in the past.” Stott said that they finished right in the middle of every tournament and said that there is a lot to come in following years. Senior night for women’s golf was October 9, where senior Ava Wille was honored for her four years with the team. Their season ended with Queen of the Hill on senior night against Turpin and Anderson.

The Women’s Varsity Tennis Team had a successful season under the coaching of Coach John McCarthy. He said he was really happy with the season, “The season [went well] with lots of development and growth. Also, the competition has been good with CJ and Badin.” McCarthy added, “Our athletes have great sportsmanship and are very courteous every single match.” The final tournament for the girls was at Princeton High School on October 1, and  McCarthy thinks they will do very well and possibly move on from sectionals into districts.

The seniors, Megan Berger and Maia Zeilman, were honored at the Women’s Tennis Senior Night at their home court at Lunken on  September 10.
