McNick classes have been testing a new way of signing out of classes to go to other areas in the school. Instead of having to ask a teacher for a pass to go ask a teacher a question during study hall or to go to the restroom, students will be able to create a pass on their computer to go where they need to go.
The new program, Securly Hall Pass, has numerous features to help keep track of where a student is going and how long they’ve been gone. For example, the bathroom pass has its own feature that flags a student if they are gone for ten minutes. The program then notifies the teacher. It will also function as the new white slip system for passes for students who need to report to the main office or to Mr. Losekamp’s office. The office aid elective will remain an option even though there eventually will not be any office slips to deliver.
Director of Technology, Mr. Adam Martin, is leading the new Securly Hall Pass test phase. It has been tested in study halls and certain teachers’ classes. Latin teacher and assistant football coach Mr. Paul Romolo is one of the teachers using the program as part of the test and he said, “It gives me a better idea on where my students are when they exit the classroom.”
Students have some opinions on the pass like senior Noah Schulte, who said, “I feel constricted with a ten-minute bathroom timer, but I do like how I don’t have to ask the teacher to go anymore.” Senior Nathan Bruns also said, “I don’t like if you don’t have a charged computer, you can’t go anywhere.” The release date for this new pass system has not been specified yet but according to Martin, it will be in use schoolwide before the end of the year.
