With February 14 a few days away, there are many ways to celebrate the special holiday with special friends instead of a significant other. This untraditional holiday originated from a 2009 episode of the sitcom Parks and Recreation. Galentine’s Day is celebrated the day before the famous holiday to have a day with the girls.
A great way to spend the day is with good food. “We all bring fun food and snacks,” sophomore Carolyn Conour said. Galentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to have a day filled with different themed treats either with homemade food boards or to-go orders from a preferred restaurant. Friends can go all over town to find different places like Condado’s Tacos, E +O Kitchen, and Maplewood Kitchen and Bar that offer different environments to create many fun stories.
Many restaurants find fun ways to celebrate this holiday such as heart shaped foods and treats:
Junior Liliana McHugh and her friends find ways to celebrate other than with food. “We love taking pictures with one another to capture memories,” she said. Some places to get pictures could be downtown, parks, or each other’s houses. Valentine’s Day dress codes can vary from dressing up in jeans and a nicer top to comfy pajamas. Since red and pink are the common Valentine’s Day colors, many stores have a variety of heart-themed clothes to choose from during this time of year. “We like to dress up cute and then get comfy later,” McHugh added. Coordinating outfits is a fun part of the planning process and there are many ways to customize this to any friend group.
“We prefer to stay in and enjoy the company of each other,” sophomore Joie Wiles said. Many friends can create the best memories by being in the comfort of their own home with the people they love. Instead of going out, making crafts such as painting canvases or making friendship bracelets, creating food boards, and watching movies are all enjoyable activities that cost little but can bring the most fun. This allows for a good time without having to do much planning. Staying in is a good way to wind down and be able to relax but also have the closeness of being around your friends.
No matter what you like, there are plenty of traditions that can create a bonding time with your friends to celebrate Galentine’s Day. Although Valentine’s Day is widely known as a romantic spent holiday, friends are able to celebrate and have just as must fun.

On Monday, Feb. 10, a group of junior girls celebrated Galentine’s Day with different Valentine’s themed food and drinks. The food boards there brought to share included icing, drinks, and waffles.
