Making it rain in the heat; Students share summer jobs

By: Maeve Rice

Many McNicholas students have summer jobs to earn money in time for a new wardrobe, a new car, or even to start their 401k.

During the summer, students are left to do whatever their heart desires, whether that includes going shopping, swimming, or vacation trips. Fortunately, there are many opportunities for high school students in the Cincinnati community to make money and stay busy.

Junior Ava Hudson works at Cane’s and said, “The pay is really good, about $15 an hour.”

Finding a job that is not only enjoyable but pays well can be hard to find. Luckily, many students have ideas for securing a summer job. Babysitting is not only a great start, but using your neighbors is a sizeable way to get those connections and clients. Even some of your personal favorite spots, Chick-fil-a, Target, Pacsun, or Graeters  are notable local options that always seem to have a “We’re Hiring” sign in the window. Another popular location is your local country club as a golf caddy, concessions worker, or lifeguard.

Freshman Megan Richardson will be working at Kings Island. Freshman Dylan White and sophomore Michael Muenchen will be working as golf caddies this summer.

Senior Ava Wille said, “My favorite part about working at Olive Garden is the fact everyone is like family, so we are all pretty close and always help each other no matter what is happening.” Having a job not only earns you money but allows you to build connections with the people in your community.

In a recent survey, Milestone asked McNicholas students what motivated them to get a job. Out of 45 respondents, 64% were influenced by themselves, 19% were by parents, and 17% by friends. Some perks of working with friends can be carpooling, making the shift go by faster, and in general, having great connections to finding a job.

Before you ask your parents for Taco Bell money, start thinking about what you can do over the summer for gas, Starbucks, or money for the mall.
