A cherry on top: McNick shares their favorite desserts

From family traditions to a sudden liking, or even a childhood memory, there are numerous desserts rockets enjoy.

In a recent survey of 35 McNicholas students about their dessert, 42% said they prefer homemade desserts, 42% said store bought, and 17% said “other.” Other results indicated that 67% said they prefer cold desserts, 33% said they prefer warm desserts, and 61% said they prefer light and refreshing desserts as opposed to rich and indulgent, which 39% said they preferred.

Students who said that chocolate chip cookies were their favorite, agreed that they simply taste good. Senior Billy Meltebrink said cookie cake was his favorite.  “I’ve just always loved it. There’s not really a backstory. I’ve just really loved to have it on my own birthday or other friends or family member’s birthday celebrations, etc,” Meltebrink said.

Sophomore Bridgy O’Malley said, “[Chocolate chip cookies] taste really good, and they are fun to make with my family.”

“[Chocolate chip cookies] is the first dessert I ever learned to make,” freshman Parker Birt said.

Students who said ice cream was their favorite or a dessert with ice cream agreed that there’s a personal connection and satisfaction. Freshman Aiden Spialek shared his love for ice cream cake. “There is something about the crunchy layer between the all the soft ice cream that just clicks with me,” he said. Sophomore Allie Spiller added, “Chocolate chip cookie dough [ice cream] is my favorite. I’ve loved it since going to UDF with my grandparents when I was little,” she said.

Students who said that cake was their favorite dessert agreed that it’s common for traditions or birthdays, or a random pick as dessert. For example, sophomore Nico Voegele, whose favorite dessert is strawberry shortcake, said, “This has not been my favorite dessert; it only became my favorite when I just grabbed the strawberry shortcake because I thought it was interesting to have for my birthday a few years ago.”

“It’s a family tradition when all my brothers are home from college,” said senior Jay Clifton, whose favorite dessert is strawberry shortcake.

Another question asked students about their adventure scale with desserts, and 53% of students said they love to be adventurous, 44% said sometimes, and 3% said they like to stick with the favorites they know.

Despite the many different options, desserts are a comforting food that brings many people together.
