Midway momentum: Who’s rising for McNick spring sports

The Rockets have hit midseason for spring sports. The Men’s Varsity Baseball Team, led by head coach Brian Gatio is holding a record of 7-5 and is 3-1 in the GCL. Gatio, a 1994 graduate of McNicholas, was the pitching coach for the state championship baseball team in 1998. They will play a total of 27 games this season and the team has many important events. They played the Doc Morris Tournament on played on April 12 at Dixie Heights HS in Kentucky where they faced off against Covington Catholic, Dixie Heights, and Campbell County, and on May 10 they will celebrate senior day for the team and their seniors:  Jack Brinck, Nathan Bruns, Ethan Childs, Nate Colyer, Peyton Doty, A.J. Gundler, Lucas Jelinek and Jack Noone. Gatio said about the season so far, “It has been a challenging year due to the weather, but pretty good so far. Pitching has been solid across the board. We need to get our bats going soon.”

The defending state champion Men’s Varsity Volleyball Team led by head coach Connor Games and assistant coaches John Sheldon, Stefan Games, and Patrick Snyder have started off the season with a record of 13-1 and are holding first place in the GCL. Senior Gavin Gerhard has been leading this team with 188 kills on the season along with the rest of the seniors Jay Clifton, Ethan Gundrum, Ben Jones, Kevin Kaser, Michael Mindrum, Sean O’Connell, Jack Sampson, and Carson Tierney who will be celebrated on senior night occurring on May 8 vs Loveland. Games explained, “The season is off to a great start, and we hope to keep this momentum throughout the rest of season.” They are looking to repeat what they did last year and make it to state competition.

The Women’s Varsity Lacrosse Team has been off to their best start to a season ever according to assistant coach Georgia Cheek. They stand at a record of 8-3 standing second in the GCL, and they are led by head coach Tim Bilbrey. The captains of the team are junior Kat Baillie, senior Julia Cheek, senior Megan Longmore, junior Kate Moran, and senior Ellie Suttles. Their senior night is on April 30 against Edgewood. Cheek said about the team, “Our season started incredibly strong, and we are still riding out that momentum. The team did a lot of work in the offseason in indoor leagues and tournaments, it has been a joy watching that pay off.”
