Teacher feature: Freeman shares calling to teach

First year English teacher Mr. Dan Freeman is from the west side of Cincinnati and said enjoys teaching English very much. “Teaching is not a job it is a calling,” he said. He attended the University of Cincinnati where he earned a degree in creative writing, then he attended Xavier to earn his master’s degree in education.

Freeman has been wanting to be a teacher all his life saying, “I have wanted to be a teacher as early as middle school.” He also thinks that English was a great fit for him and that teaching it to students helps them in everyday life even though they may not realize it. Apart from English, Freeman teaches speech and debate where students learn public speaking and debating skills on certain topics.

Freeman completed his student teaching semester at McNick alongside English teacher Mrs. Laura Rupp. This experience was one of the key factors in him getting to know the McNicholas community and eventually end up teaching at McNick. “While student teaching here I got a sense of the family aspect this school shows and when an English teacher job was available, I was happy to apply,” he said.  Freeman said he is very happy to be at McNick, that he has had a great first year experience, and that he hopes to stay for years to come.
