One per person; Rockets share their favorite office bowl candy

When students are looking for a sweet treat, the main office is the place to go.

With candy galore, the office receptionist and attendance coordinator, Mrs. Jill Cheek is delighted to offer a candy bowl. Cheek said, “I get it for students to come visit me.” She offers an assortment of candy every day, varying from Jolly Ranchers, Werther’s caramels, and many more.

In a recent Milestone survey, out of the 94 respondents, 19% said they visit Cheek’s office daily solely for candy. While 44% said they visit weekly, 37% said they never visit solely for candy. Junior Zarius Harvey said he visits daily for candy. He added that Twix and Snickers are his favorites.

Theology teacher and Director of Mission & Ministry, Mr. Jeff Hutchinson-Smyth, said he never visits for candy, but added, “I do enjoy the candy in Mrs. Cheek’s office, but I never visit solely for the candy. I visit to see Mrs. Cheek, and then I might just grab a piece of candy while I’m there.”

“I buy the candy once a week and then refresh the bowl 1-2 times when needed,” Cheek said.

Freshman Luke Amann stated that he goes weekly, and he prefers chocolate over sour candy, but his favorite candy that Cheek offers is Jolly Ranchers.

On the survey, students and faculty were also asked if they prefer chocolate or sour candies. The results were tight; chocolate took the crown at 57% and sour candy at 43%. Sophomore Anne Steinmetz said she preferred sour over chocolate, and Smarties are her favorite candy that Cheek offers.

Cheek considers allergies, so she tries to get hard candy, but around Halloween when she offers more options, especially chocolate varieties, she said, “I really count on kids knowing what they can and can’t have.”

So, for anyone with a sweet tooth, take a trip to the main office, say hi to Mrs. Cheek, and grab a piece of candy — or two.
