Turning on the burner; Students share their hot takes

At McNicholas High School, students have no trouble sharing their strong opinions.

In a recent Milestone survey, students across all grade levels shared their “hot takes” that go against popular trends. From food and music to fashion and sports, the responses revealed just how diverse student perspectives can be.

Food was one of the most common categories where students shared their disagreements. Freshman Hanna Ruggiero stated, “Tacos are overrated,” and freshman Ayden Sparks added, “Spaghetti is awful.”

Freshman Lily June said, “Soda is better in a can than in a bottle,” and added her opinion about chocolate: “Dark chocolate tastes better than milk or white.”

And of course there is the ongoing pineapple on pizza debate that appeared many times, with students sharing opinions both for and against pineapple on pizza.

Another frequent topic of disagreement was music, particularly when it came to popular artists. Freshman Mary Fullarton said, “Taylor Swift is extremely overrated,” while others disagreed and stated that “Taylor Swift is the best lyricist of all time.” Freshman Nick Browning shared a broader opinion: “Rap music is overrated” with others agreeing that “Rap is dying.”

Social media trends sparked several responses. Sophomore Owen Flora said that he doesn’t get the hype about “the 67 trend.” “The 67 meme drives me crazy” another student shared. Some felt that “Instagram is better than TikTok,” and in the phone debate, sophomore Brock Hauck said, “Android is better than iPhones.”

Sports-related hot takes were also part of the mix. Freshman Jack Mummert made an NFL statement and said, “The Steelers are the best team of all time,” and predicted they’ll win their division.

Not everyone is in agreement, but Rockets  are definitely not afraid to share their opinions whether it’s music, food, or trends.
