The annual Club Fair is held at the beginning of every school year at McNicholas. Its purpose is to showcase the clubs and organizations offered at McNick that students are able to join to be more involved during high school.
Most clubs and organizations are open to anyone who wants to join, and anyone that is interested can reach out to the club’s moderators or student leaders. “We are looking for students who are open and welcoming and have an interest in other cultures,” Ms. Mel Gaskins said. Gaskins is the International Student Coordinator and Ski Club moderator.
Clubs and organizations at McNicholas fit within three categories: hobbies, faith, and academics. Those based on faith are for students looking to get more in touch with their spiritual side, while. Hobby clubs are ways for students to find shared activity interests with others. Clubs under this category include Arts & Crafts Club, Cooking Club, and Minecraft Club. Clubs such as Faith on Fire and Catholic Relief Services are two examples of faith-based clubs. Academic clubs are educational based and include the International Ambassadors and Spanish Club.
Some clubs require applications, but others require just the student who is interested in showing up to a meeting. “[To join Ski Club] a student would need to purchase a pass through Perfect North,” Gaskins said.
For the Faith on Fire Club, which meets on select Wednesday mornings before school each month, English teacher and moderator Mrs. Julie Dill said, She did add that “it would be better if they would tell a student group leader,” which include juniors Tessa Calicitrai, Annie McCarty, and Annabel Moeves.
High school is more than just attending classes from 7:40 a.m. – 2:40 p.m. and joining a club or organization at McNick can lead to more connections with the student body.
