As Halloween approaches, students get into the spooky spirit with decorations, costumes, and scary traditions. From pumpkin carving to haunted houses, the season brings excitement and creativity to the McNicholas community.
Freshman Tenley Hollon said, “I started decorating mid-October. My family decorated the house with caution tape, skeletons, and pumpkins. I also watch The Nightmare Before Christmas every year for Halloween, and I am going as one of the witches from that movie.”
Sophomore Jack Lord said during Halloween, he enjoys decorating and dressing up. “My family and I decorated the outside of our house with pumpkins and other spooky decorations,” he said. “This year I am dressing up as Frozone.”
Not everyone goes all-out for the holiday, but even small touches make the season special. “Well, my family wasn’t big on Halloween, but they do run a pig farm,” freshman Derek Shaw said. “My mom usually buys some pumpkins, spider webs, and other decorations for the outside of the house. I usually dress up for Halloween, but I don’t think I am going to this year.”
Other students have traditions that bring a mix of thrills and fun. Sophomore Quinn McHugh said his must-do activity is to “go to some haunted houses and carve pumpkins.” Junior Riley Bausch said she celebrates with “a family and friend Halloween get-together.”
Some students like to add a little scare to their celebrations. Sophomore Anne Steinmetz said her tradition is to “scare my neighbors the day before,” while Senior Dylan Marino said he likes to “scare my parents.”
Senior Madison McPherson said she enjoys going to pumpkin patches and watching classic horror Halloween movies. Junior Joshua DeBrosse said his go to activiy during the Halloween season is to watch horror films. Sophomore Callie Laskey said her go-to activity to prepare for Halloween is to decorate her house and she prefers more family friendly movies instead of horror.
McNick also does Halloween celebrations by dressing up for the day and possibly trick-or-treating during Crew.
Whether it was decorating, dressing up, or finding ways to scare friends and family, McNick students embraced the Halloween season in their own ways.
