As McNicholas celebrates the 74th annual Mardi Gras ceremony, the tradition continues this year with the court being announced on January 16. Recognized for their service and commitment to McNick, this year’s Maid of Honor is Grace Emmaline McCafferty and Captain of the Ball is Steven Daniel Meltebrink. Here is a Q and A to get to know them.
Maid of Honor: Grace McCafferty
Q: How did it feel to have your name announced?
A: I was surprised that’s for sure, I wasn’t expecting it, but it felt great to be recognized by my peers and teachers for all the service work I have done throughout my four years here.
Q: What would you consider to be your biggest achievement at McNick?
A: I would say being voted Maid of Honor is a huge accomplishment, but outside of that and Mardi Gras, I would say the leadership roles I have been able to take on both throughout the school and in my various sports those have meant a lot to me. I hope I’ve left an impact on not only the school, but the people I’ve interacted with.
Q: What is some of the service you have done for the school?
A: I am a student ambassador, on [CREW] leadership team, and am also a peer mentor. I have done lots of Open House events, 8th grade ice cream socials, and incoming freshman events.
Q: What advice would you give to the underclassmen or incoming freshmen about service and becoming involved?
A: I would definitely say don’t be nervous or hesitant to join any service club or related group. I would say, especially outside of McNick don’t be afraid to take part in other service activities, because I think some people are afraid to join activities that aren’t McNick affiliated but I have done some of my most favorite service that way so I would definitely recommend that.
Captain of the Ball: Steven Meltebrink
Q: How did it feel to have your name announced?
A: It was very surprising because I did not think I was going to be Captain of the Ball, and it was really awesome that I was recognized for the service I’ve done at McNick.
Q: What would you consider to be your biggest achievement at McNick?
A: My biggest achievement is probably being named Captain of the Ball. It was a combination of all the service I’ve done at McNick, and I felt gratitude for the people who voted for me and to be in this position.
Q: What is some of the service you have done for the school?
A: I am a student ambassador, crew leader, and I help with youth football camps at McNick.
Q: What advice would you give to the underclassmen or incoming freshmen about service and becoming involved?
A: Don’t be too shy and get outside of your comfort zone because that’s how you really find yourself is getting outside of that zone.
