All three McNicholas football teams finished their regular seasons as GCL Central Champions. The reserve team went five wins to one loss, the freshman team was undefeated, and the varsity team will advance to the play-offs with a record of seven wins and three losses.
The varsity football team played their final regular season game against Archbishop Badin High School on Friday, Oct. 26, and won 29 to 12. Head Coach Mike Orlando is really proud of what the team accomplished so far, and is excited for the team to go to the play-offs.
“We play the season to get into the play-offs, and we play the play-offs to win,” Orlando said. “I’m ecstatic for them.”
The team will play their first game of post-season in the Regional Quarterfinals against Gallia Academy on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7:00 pm. In 2010, the Rockets advanced all the way to the State Semifinals. After last year’s losing season, the team is excited to be back in the play-offs.
“It’s an awesome feeling to go from a 2-8 record to 7-3 and GCL Champs,” said senior Thomas Vogele. “This season’s been incredible. I’ve never had more fun in my life. Now we’re looking to make a deep run in the playoffs,” Vogele added.
The freshman team played their final game on Saturday, Oct. 27, also against Badin. The game went into double over time, and in the end McNick won 18 to 12. With this victory, the freshman team completed their undefeated streak.
“We have played a very tough schedule this year considering we are a Division 3 program and most of the teams we have played are Division 1 or 2,” Freshman Coach Ron Barnes said. “We are very proud of what we have accomplished.”
