Basketball travelling for tournament

basketballOver Christmas break the Mens’ Basketball Teams will be traveling to Wheeling, West Virginia on Dec. 28 and 29 to play in the Undo’s Holiday Tournament at Wheeling Jesuit University.

This is the first time that McNicholas basketball has travelled out of state to play in a tournament. Their first game in the tournament will be against Varsity Football Coach Mike Orlando’s alma mater, Steubenville Central Catholic, at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 28. It is a JV and Varsity tournament, so both teams will have the opportunity to play.

Assistant Coach Jack Kaniecki said that they would not know their opponents very well. “I’m excited to be playing teams we normally wouldn’t be able to play,” said junior and varsity player Brian Corpuz.

Kaniecki’s alma mater, Wheeling Central Catholic, will also be playing in the tournament.

Head coach Tim Monahan said, “I think it is great for the players and coaches to spend some time together away from the basketball court and really bond together and enjoy each other’s company for a few days and see new places.”

Even though they are excited about the tournament they won’t lose focus on their other games. Monahan said, “We have to not worry about this tournament until it is the next game.”

Monahan added, “It was nice to get invited to this and we will continue to look to travel to other places so the kids can experience other areas as well as some good basketball.”
