McNicholas to host Holiday Basketball Tournament

holiday tournMcNicholas will host the first ever Freshman and Junior Varsity Holiday Basketball Tournament on the weekend on Dec. 21 and 22.

Varsity Basketball Coach and event organizer Tim Monahan said that during the holidays, many varsity teams travel, including McNick’s, and it’s hard to find games for the JV and freshman teams.  This tournament seemed like a perfect solution.

“We thought it would be neat to host and have other teams come to us,” Monahan said. They received a good response, with teams coming down from Mason and Dayton.

It will be a two-day tournament, and all teams will be playing both days. Saturday is the first round, and Sunday will be the Championship games, as well as a consolation bracket for the teams who lost on day one. Monahan said the McNicholas players are looking forward to playing the tournament on their home court and to be able to play different schools.

“It’s good practice because they’re going to play teams they’ve never played before,” Monahan said. “[The players] are all really excited.”

Monahan also said that if the tournament is a success this year, they hope that it becomes an annual tradition.

Fans are encouraged to come out and support the basketball players and show off their Rocket pride as hosts of this Holiday tournament. The games run from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. both days.
