Bein’ vegan for a reason

It’s no surprise that more and more people are getting serious about their food choices and way of life. These days it seems like all we hear about is how important it is to follow the perfect diet, foods we should or shouldn’t eat to get that perfect figure, and everything in between. So what? Some people follow these trends for a physical change, but others prove to be following these lifestyles for deeper, moralistic reasons.

So what even is a vegan? Merriam-Webster defines a vegan as a person who does not eat any food that comes from animals and who often also does not support or use animal products. To most vegans, this lifestyle can be described as having decided to live a lifestyle that does not support animal exploitation.

Junior Alessia Accordino said, “The reason I chose to become a vegan is because I wanted a healthier lifestyle and loved the idea that no animals are harmed in the process of creating the food i consume.” Accordino did not merely fall into the trap of social media pressuring her and making her feel sorry for her previous lifestyle, but rather by choice to better herself and the environment. “It’s been about two years now since I chose to go vegan. Sometimes it’s hard, but over time I’ve gotten used to it and have actually been a lot more creative with my food. It’s fun!” Accordino added. She said she loves her choice and is passionate to speak about it. In fact, she will be releasing a blog all about this lifestyle and her experience with it, with a launch date in March.

Another advocate for veganism and all of its benefits is theology teacher Mr. John Norman. Norman has been a vegan for nine years now. “It’s complicated!  But in a ‘nutshell’ I believe that eating more vegetables, grains, fruits and plant proteins is better, long term, for the availability of nutritious food for all peoples as well as the protection of the ecosystem,” Norman said.

Basically, there appears to be an extremely positive outcome with trying out new dietary lifestyles for a greater cause. It may seem like an arduous task, but it can really change people’s lives and the world for the better. Eat more tofu!
