Softball season starts with high expectations

The Varsity Softball Team’s regular season began on April 1, against Walnut Hills, where they won 13-2.  They were also part of a tournament that took place at New Richmond where they lost to Hilltop High School, a school near Toledo, and beat Grant County High School.

There are twelve players on the varsity team with four seniors, including the team manager, senior Sehee Jang.  Captains include seniors Hannah Brune, Shannon Walsh, and Abby Gromek.  The returning starters are juniors Alessia Accordino and Jackie Geygan, both pitchers, Brune at first base, junior Maddie Whitmore at second base, junior Christiane Hazzard at third base, and Walsh, who is moving from outfield to catcher.

They expect their hardest games this season to be against Badin and Roger Bacon, who is returning an All-League pitcher. “This season I am expecting us to compete for a league title, to go as far as possible in the state tournament, and most importantly to grow together as a team on and off the field,” assistant coach Mr. Willy Corbett said. Besides Corbett, coaches include Mr. Terry Doyle returning as head coach, and Mr. Matt Wehrman returning to coach the JV team.

“There is a mix of returning players and new players on the team. Taking each game one at a time, and improving with each game will be very important,” Corbett said.

The roster and schedules for this year’s season can be found on the McNick website.
