Bump, set, spike: Men’s volleyball begins new season

The McNick Men’s Volleyball Varsity and JV Teams played their first game of the season over Spring Break. Both teams lost to Fenwick and the Varsity team lost their second game against Alter. The teams made a comeback at their game on April 5 against Roger Bacon, where they both won.  “We tried our best and were missing a few players because of Spring Break, so I think we could win our next few games,” senior Grant Painter said. Painter, along with seniors Jake Round and Matt Barbara, are the captains of the varsity team. They have been playing together since their freshman year and look forward to their last season.

The varsity team is comprised of Painter, Round, Barbara, Kevin Grannen, and Matthew Massie; juniors Nate Hamad, Andy Schmidt, David Collette, Joe Neiheisel, Alex Wehmeyer, and Peter Fisher; and sophomores Brandon Fulmer and Alex Deimling. They are coached by Julie Mulvey, who has been coaching for 12 years, and assistant coach Kendall Powers.

The JV team is comprised of seniors Kevin Grannen and Matthew Massie; juniors David Collette and Joe Neiheisel; sophomores Bryce Miller, Nicholas Keith, Brandon Fulmer, Alex Deimling, and Wade Brokamp; and freshman Luke Guessford. The JV team is coached by Mike Donnelly.

With many returning players, the team plans on expanding on their teamwork from past years. The team’s goal for this season is to play above and beyond what is expected and to win state Mulvey said. “Something that could help us a lot as a team would be support from McNick, so come on and cheer us on at our games” said Painter.

The Men’s Volleyball Teams have their next match against Elder at McNick on April 11, with JV beginning at 5 p.m., followed by Varsity at 6 p.m.
