With fall sports now over, a new year of basketball with a new team is just getting started for head coach Tim Monahan and his coaching staff.
Last season, the team had a 7-14 regular season record going 3-7 within the GCL Co-ed conference. They will enter this season without last year’s seniors Jacob Cheek and Nicholas Staderman. Sophomores Luke Brooks and Jake Watford, junior Matthew Neuzil, and senior Cameron Voelker will all look to make a statement in their first season as varsity basketball players.
“This season we want to play quick, get more possessions, and have more fun games, but first we must get some players back from injury. I want to continue to build relationships with the players and we have a great group of guys. Our mindset is to do well and we’re excited for the upcoming season and hoping for a big student section,” Monahan said.
Nathan Brunot, Cameron Haynes, and Cameron Voelker will lead the way as seniors this season. “Our goal is to win the GCL and get past Dayton,” Brunot said. “I want to build relationships with the younger guys, and a personal goal for this season is to shoot at least 60% from the free throw line,” he added.
“This year we are going to be a deep and experienced team with 7 returning varsity players out of the 10. As of right now, we are focused on beating our rival Turpin when we open up the season on our home court. Our team goals we have this year is to take back King of the Hill, win the GCL coed, take down LaSalle, and win and go beyond Dayton. These are some of the things we haven’t reached in recent years,” junior Ryan Reidy said.
“We have the potential to be one of the better McNicholas basketball teams that they’ve had,” he added.
McNicholas will host Turpin in its first regular season game on December 6 with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
