On Friday, April 21, the McNick Rockets defeated the Fenwick Falcons 8-5 on the road at Fenwick. As of April 25, MaxPreps has the Rockets standing 9-2 overall and 6-0 in their conference.
The varsity team includes freshman Emma Melcher, sophomores Hope Bridgers, Abby Bryll, Jessica Carnes, Alyssa Herper, Kelly Strotman, and Lillie Zimmerman, and seniors Alessia Accordino, Jaclyn Geygan, Christiane Hazzard, Bridget Strotman, and Madison Whitmore.
The Rockets started the game strong with a stolen base and a single in the first inning, and another single by Kelly Strotman in the second inning. Senior pitcher/infielder Accordino was a big part of the win. She pitched seven innings, and allowed five runs, ten hits, and struck out six.
The Rockets had 13 hits total. Hazzard, Geygan, Strotman, and Zimmerman scored multiple hits. Hazzard went three for three to lead in hits. Hazzard also led in walks with two, and four quality at bats. Strotman led with three runs batted in. Whitmore was out for the game due to a concussion she received two days before during their game against Fenwick.
Senior infielder Bridget Strotman believes that the team has been playing well because of their chemistry. “We had to change some things around on the field due to Whitmore not being able to play, but we held it together well,” Strotman said. In Strotman’s opinion, one thing that the team needs to work on is holding it together when they have two outs. “When we are faced with a challenge, we can step up to the plate. No pun intended,” Strotman said.
The Rockets’ next game is Wednesday, April 26, at Badin.
