Defeating breakfast: How to bake French toast in a mug

Even though it is a well-known fact that eating breakfast gives you energy throughout your whole day, a common problem is the lack of time or lack of energy students have to make breakfast. Breakfast is the one meal many have been trying for years to make simpler and quicker. For example, Nature Valley’s breakfast biscuit is designed to minimize time and effort to encourage more people to eat breakfast in the morning.

The recent introduction of mug cakes has piqued the interest of foodies and amateur eaters alike. Usually, mug cakes are synonymous with desserts; however, it’s easy to tweak a recipe to meet your breakfast needs. One way to make a delicious breakfast, while retaining a dessert-like essence is French toast.

The ingredients you will need to craft French toast in a mug are:

  • 1/3 Cup of milk
  • 2 Large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon softened butter
  • 4 slices of bread (whichever type you have available)
  • (Optional) Powdered sugar/Maple syrup for after baking
  • (Optional) 1 Tablespoon of toppings (chocolate chips, dried fruit, raisins, chopped nuts, etc.)

Allow yourself about 10 minutes for prep time and cook time, then follow these directions:

Step 1: In a large measuring cup, mix together milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Place to the side after mixed.

Step 2: Using the softened butter, lightly grease the sides of the mug to prevent the toast from sticking.

Step 3: Cut the 4 slices of bread into cubes.

Step 4: If you choose to add extra toppings, divide the sliced bread into two halves. Add in the first half of the bread, then add your toppings, then the other half. If you do not add other toppings, simply add all of your bread to your mug.

Step 5: Pour the mixture from step one over the bread.

Step 6: Place the mug in the microwave and heat on high for 1 and half minutes. Take the mug out and check for any remaining liquid. If liquid remains in the mug, place it back in the microwave and heat again for another minute.

Step 7: Top with powdered sugar or maple syrup and enjoy!
