Ablaze, McMakerspace, and St. Vincent DePaul Youth Conference are three additions to the long list of clubs available for Rockets. Made to further bond the McNick community, these clubs were formed by the common interests of the student body and allow another chance for students who wish to be involved to meet more people in the community.
The St. Vincent de Paul Youth Conference moderated by Theology teacher Teresa Davis.
“This club is reaching out to the Mt. Washington area and the greater Cincinnati area. It is an opportunity for service learning, and to help the people in need. The mission is to serve the poor,” Davis said.
Participants attend conferences and youth programs to learn more information, and then work collaboratively to put that information into action by helping others.
“You have to be willing to have an open mind and be willing to serve others,” Davis said.
Another new club offering for students is McMakerspace moderated by Educational Director of Technology Emily Materna and Librarian Chelsea Almer. “This club has a goal of teaching students about new technology and developing skills with them. The members use the many Mc Makerspace tools, such as the 3D printer, virtual reality, and model building. It’s meant to be a place to have fun,” Materna said.
Mc Makerspace is open to all students who want to try new technology that they might not have any access to at home.
Social Studies teacher and new faculty member Todd Naumann is the moderator of the new club Ablaze. “Ablaze is a student organized club…[that] has a goal of allowing students to examine their faith and spread their faith life outside of just school led events and classes and in school hours.”
“This club organized the freshman mass at the beginning of this school year, however [we] have not had [many] active events on campus or off. They plan to have more active events, where students can grow their spiritual life from off campus,” Naumann added.
These clubs offer new opportunities for students to join an activity that they have not tried before. Students should watch their email and/or contact any of the moderators for meeting times or with any further questions.
The commissioning for the members of the St. Vincent de Paul conference took place in October in McNick’s chapel. Moderator Teresa Davis said, “This club is full of members wanting to serve and help the less fortunate of the Mt. Washington and Cincinnati area.”
