Last week McNicholas High School along with thousands of other Catholic schools across the nation celebrated National Catholic School Week or CSW. CSW, which begins on the last Sunday of January, was started in 1974 and is an annual week-long celebration that celebrates Catholic education. During the Week of Feb. 1, McNick students celebrated CSW with different themes and activities in their classrooms and CREW throughout the week.

On Monday, the students of McNick started the week with the theme of College Day. Students could wear college appeal from any college they chose, and students who chose not to participate had to wear their normal uniform. In C.R.E.W. students started the week decorating popsicles sticks to be used for a 3-D cross. After school there was a prayer service sponsored by Hands Across Campus for the first day of Black History Month.

On Tuesday, the theme of the day was Tie Dye. Students had the choice to come to school in their colorful tie dye clothing. Following Monday, there were also C.R.E.W. activities on Tuesday. The CREW activity was coloring stained glassed windows. The best stained glass window from each CREW was brought to the lobby and judged.

The daily theme for Wednesday was “Wacky Tacky.” Students dressed in the wackiest and tackiest clothes they could find, which included tutus, mismatched socks and shoes, and crazy hair. The CREW activity for Wednesday morning was a “Wacky Tacky” contest. Each CREW had the option of sending their wackiest dressed student to the gym to get judged for the best outfit. There was however, no declared winner.

Thursday was kicked off with a friendly Kahoot tournament between CREWs. Senior Jack Dause, junior Brogan Dolan, and senior Nicholas Clark all brought home trophies. The clothing theme for the day was flannel. On Wednesday, art students began hanging their recent works of art – caricatures of McNicholas faculty and staff.

The final school day during CSW had the theme of McNick spirit wear. Students got to show how much spirit and love they have for McNicholas High School on spirit day. Due to Covid, the annual Penny Day tradition was canceled, but McNick still held the annual blood drive from 7:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m., giving the McNick students a chance to help others.
