Beechmont battle: Eating ‘Mor Chikin’ at McNicholas High School

By Rosie Smith Canes and Chick fila are two competitive fast-food restaurants and because they have many similarities it is controversial to which is better. The McNicholas Rockets share their opinions on the debate.

Chicken tenders are not equal, especially when the choices are Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers or Chick-fil-a. In a recent survey of 108 McNicholas students, 65% said Chick-fil-a is the better choice, while 35% of students said that Cane’s is better.

Students who picked Chick-fil-a agreed that the quality at Cane’s is not as good as Chick-fil-a and that Chick-fil-a is more polite and has better service. Students who chose Chick-fil-a said Cane’s has more of a “Wendy’s” or “McDonalds” type of service. Students also added that there are not as many options at Canes as Chick-fil-a. Respondents also agreed that Cane’s is overrated. “Cane’s only outstanding thing is their coleslaw whereas at Chick-fil-a, everything is good,” freshman Meghan Runte said.

Senior Colette Dawson, who chose Chick-fil-a as her favorite, said she goes monthly, and added, “Cane’s is too greasy.” Dawson’s go-to order at Chick-fil-a is an 8-count nugget with fries and a sweet tea.

Junior Spencer VonBusch, who chose Cane’s, said he goes often, and said the best thing about it is “the chicken and sauce.” His go-to order is the 3-finger combo, with a large drink and an extra Canes’ sauce.

For the sauce lovers, 20% of the respondents said that Cane’s sauce is the best part of their menu, while 8% said that Chick-fil-a’s sauce is what they like most about it. Freshman Megan Richardson said that Cane’s sauce is better than a regular sauce and that, “Canes is [more] flavorful.”

And for the double dippers, multiple students sided with both quick chicken restaurants, like freshman Kelsey Naumann, she chose Chick-fil-a but said she likes Cane’s sauce because it has a unique flavor and has never tasted anything like it.

Sophomore Michael Muenchen, who chose Cane’s, agreed that Chick-fil-a has a better variety, and that’s what attracts customers. “Honestly I think they are about equal. I like Cane’s better, but Chick-fil-a’s variety is what makes them great too. So honestly in this battle I think it is 51- 49 Cane’s,” Muenchen said.
