From McNicholas to Masterpieces: Seniors Pursue Art Beyond High School

By Sarah Marshall and Whitley Sway

McNicholas High School honored nine senior students for achievements in the arts during a ceremony on Tuesday, April 28. Seniors Mia Colonna Brady Edwards, Ava Hudson, Caleb Link, Connor Louis, Madison McPherson, Addison Reineke, Ellen Robey, and Evie Smith are continuing their passion for art beyond high school.

Mia Colonna will be attending Miami University in Oxford, Ohio to study interior design. “As soon as I stepped on campus, I immediately felt at home,” Colonna stated. She hopes to be able to design spaces in different houses and potentially have her own firm. “I hope to spend at least one semester at the Luxemburg campus as they have a studio there for me to continue my classes,” she added. Miami has many study abroad opportunities Colonna hopes to be involved in.

Brady Edwards will attend the University of Cincinnati for his first year, majoring in mechanical engineering, before transferring to the University of Michigan to study naval architecture and marine engineering. “I chose UC for the free tuition and convenience, then I plan to attend Michigan because they offer the program I want,” Edwards said. The Macroscope system, also known as CLGP, was introduced to improve campus security. Edward’s goal is to create similar security measures on ships in his future career.

Ava Hudson is also attending the University of Cincinnati. She will be studying in the DAAP program in communication design. “DAAP is one of the best art programs in the nation, and it has a great co-op program which would help me establish connections for my future job,” she said. Hudson received the Ohio Arts Honor Diploma, a Silver Key for Scholastic Art and Writing, and was part of the first Ambassador trip to China. In the future, she hopes to become an art director and manage her own graphic design company.

Caleb Link will be attending the University of Cincinnati with a major in architecture. He chose to stay close to home and take advantage of UCs’ co-op programs within his major. He received the Ohio Arts Diploma and hopes to design and oversee the construction of his own house one day.

Connor Louis is pursuing an architecture major through the University of Cincinnati’s Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) program. Louis has been interested in architecture since sixth grade. Knowing that UC is nearby, it helped him decide on a program. “It’s rated top five in the country for architecture, top five in the country for internships,” Louis said. “It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a while.”

Maddie McPherson will attend the University of Cincinnati to study industrial design, with a minor in materials engineering. McPherson’s interest in the arts began in middle school while playing Bloxburg on Roblox. She later received a gold key from Scholastic Art, which influenced her decision to enroll in the university’s Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) program. “Follow your heart,” McPherson said.

Addison Reineke will be attending the University of Cincinnati studying in the DAAP program in communication design. Art has always been a part of Reineke’s life, and she is able to continue this through the opportunities DAAP is giving her. She hopes to become a graphic designer.

Ellen Robey will be attending Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, next year. She is majoring in psychology and art therapy. She hopes to be able to become an art therapist and help kids. She said she chose Miami because she “How much nature they had and how nice the community was.”

Like Robey, Evie Smith will be going to Oxford, Ohio, as well to study psychology and art therapy at Miami University. Her mom also attended Miami University, so she can keep the legacy and enjoy the college town Miami offers. Smith said she hopes to become some type of therapist with her degree.
