New year, new traditions for CREW

By Alex Minella

With new service opportunities, increased flight programming, and plans for new traditions, CREW is focused on building relationships and strengthening the McNicholas community this school year.

Student Culture Coordinator Mr. Todd Naumann continues to oversee the program and work with student leaders to build engagement across the school. Naumann stated that his main goal for the school year is to “build relationships, grow in virtue, have fun, and create a healthy school culture.”

One change to CREW this year is the addition of service ministries, where each flight will work together with their assigned local organization. Naumann hopes students will “build relationships with partners in the community to help make a positive impact.” Each flight is paired with a local service organization:

Flight 189: St. Francis/St. Joseph Catholic Worker House (Walnut St.)

Flight 318: People Working Cooperatively (Cincinnati)

Flight 413: Boys & Girls Club of Cincinnati (Eastgate)

Flight 511: Carmel Manor (NKY)

Flight 513: Stepping Stones (Given Rd.)

Flight 565: St. Vincent de Paul (Bank St.)

Student Body President senior Tessa Calcitrai hope that by the end of the year students will feel supported. Calcitrai said the pep rallies make “me feel like I’m a part of an amazing community that cares and celebrates each other.” Calcitrai said she has been working with the executive team to revise leadership programming and to bring in new traditions. One tradition being introduced for the seniors as a part of their grade-level programming will be color wars.

Junior Class President Kelsey Naumann said she hopes to increase student involvement and help students feel included in their flights and the school community. “I am most excited about the relationships that will be made and deepened through the activities and lessons taught by spending time together in CREW,” she said. She hopes these experiences will help shape the program throughout the year, with “community” being the one word she hopes can describe CREW by the end of the year.

Sophomore Class President Sofia Lanham said flight and grade-level programming are the focuses for CREW this year. “We have put a lot of time into planning activities to bond our flights and grades,” Lanham stated. She also said that she “hopes by the end of the year students will be able to describe CREW as ‘engaged’.”

Freshman Class President Evan McClure’s goal this year is “to make the freshman class as well as the rest of the school feel more bonded to the best of my ability.” McClure wants CREW to be described as “friendly” by the end of the year. He stated, “Our role as leaders is to make Mcnick great for every student.”

As the school year continues, CREW leaders will continue to bring students together across grade levels with service and flight/grade-level programming along with new traditions and opportunities throughout the year.
