McNick welcomes new winter sports coaches

The McNicholas Athletic Department welcomed two new coaches for the 2011-2012 winter season: Varsity Dance Team Head Coach Ms. Erin McGrail and Wrestling Head Coach Mr. Jason Babinec.

McGrail joined McNick’s athletic coaching staff in August 2011 just before dance team practices began.

“I am thrilled to be a part of McNick’s dance team. The girls are such a nice group and so hard-working,” McGrail said.

Prior to being the dance team coach, McGrail worked for the National Dance Alliance (NDA), had been named Collegiate All-American dancer three times, and spent one summer dancing with the Joffrey Ballet inNew York City. She is a 2011 graduate of Xavier University, where she was on the dance team for four years.

McGrail learned about the position from Angela Fraiz, McNicholas Class of 2007, who was a member of Xavier’s dance team with McGrail.

“I heard such great things about the people of McNick from my friend Angela,” McGrail said. “I had a wonderful time dancing for a Catholic University, so I knew that I would enjoy coaching at a Catholic high school just as much.”

In late October, Babinec was announced as the new head wrestling coach.

“I am extremely excited and blessed with being the new head coach. It was always a goal to move through the ranks and become a head coach,” Babinec said.

Babinec is a graduate of Milford High School where he wrestled and ran track.  He received a track scholarship to the University of Michigan and briefly attended college there, before transferring to Thomas More College where he played football.

Babinec returned to Milford High School to become assistant coach under his father, Peter Babinec. After being recommended by McNicholas Curriculum Director Mr. Dan Rosenbaum, Babinec was chosen as the head wrestling coach by Athletic Director Mr. Rob Heise.

“Milford has always been home, but I wanted to go out of my comfort zone. I wanted to build up a team to rival Moeller or St. Xavier, and I was fortunate to become a head coach,” Babinec said.
