The annual Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser was held at McNicholas on Saturday, Jan. 26, and raised $825 for cancer. The event was held during the JV and Varsity games against Roger Bacon, where JV won 55 to 40 and the varsity team finished with a close 51 to 49 victory.
The event raised money through raffles and three point shoot-a-thons at half times of the JV and varsity games. In addition, seven prizes were raffled off during a PEP assembly held during the school day. The biggest prize, an athletic pass for free admission to home sporting events next school year, went to junior Maggie Danker. The Wall of Hope, which honored those who have fought against cancer, also raised money through student donations.
“Coaches v. Cancer is a great event,” JV basketball coach and event coordinator Jack Kaniecki said. “It gives us all a chance to step back and realize that although we coaches make it seem like every game is do or die, there are people out there fighting real life or death battles. The results of our basketball games are minuscule compared to the results of someone’s fight with cancer.”
