On January 15, McNicholas will play host to annual King of the Hill wrestling meet for 2014. The meet will involve McNick and neighborhood rivals Anderson and Turpin. The McNicholas Wrestling Team is coached by Craig Moore. McNick has won the competition twice, in the event’s inaugural year and again in 2002. Even though McNick has a smaller team than in the past, they hope to crown multiple individual Kings of the Hill. Senior wrestler Zack Baca, who is a 4-year member of the team, said King of the Hill is the biggest meet outside of the postseason.

“It’s about pride: pride in your school, our wrestling team, and yourself to go out and perform in front of our rival schools,” Baca said. The starting lineup for McNick at King of the Hill is as follows:

• 120 lbs.- Rielly Dowell-Howko
• 126 lbs.- Clayton Dause
• 132 lbs.- Reese Jabin
• 138 lbs.- Cameron Engel
• 145 lbs.- Zack Baca or Ty Jabin
• 152 lbs.- Nick Keri
• 160 lbs.- Ronnie Ehemann
• 182 lbs.- Tyler Gumbert

Baca says he’s just excited to compete at the meet. “We just want to prove to these big schools that we can hang with them,” Baca said. “This is a huge competition that, especially as a senior, you look forward to all year.”

The event will take place in the McNicholas Main Gym after school on Wednesday, Jan. 15. Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for students. The Wrestling Team will also be selling King of the Hill t-shirts for $13. All proceeds from the t-shirt sales will benefit the wrestling program.
