In the 2014-2015 school year, senior Allie O’Keefe took a step to expand McNicholas High School’s reach and become part of the global community by starting a new chapter of United for Uganda (U4U).
U4U is a student run non-profit organization started at Moeller High School that aims to support the education of children living in Uganda. It has expanded since its beginning and now includes more than 30 high school and college chapters in the Cincinnati area.
O’Keefe found out about the organization through a student at Moeller and was immediately drawn to the cause. “It’s such a neat thing to be able to help kids get an education all the way over in Uganda,” O’Keefe said.
So far, the McNick chapter is sponsoring three children. In order to support them financially, the club will need to raise $900. To do this, the help of the whole school is needed. The club is always open to new members, and O’Keefe said the help of both seniors and underclassmen is necessary and appreciated.
Students who are unable to become members but still wish to aid the club can help in other ways. On Oct. 22, U4U will have a bake sale during both lunches. All items will be $1, and the money raised will go directly to supporting the education of the three sponsored children. By buying a treat, students will be assisting the club, and therefore assisting the children in Uganda.
