The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has been coming to life throughout the McNicholas halls with Homecoming Spirit Week Sept. 19-24.
“Spirit Week started on Sept. 19, starting off the Homecoming Week by allowing students to dress up in the themes given for each day, except for Wednesday concerning Mass Day,” Physics teacher and Homecoming Moderator Jonathan Spurlock said. Spirit Week also includes Harry Potter Kahoot Trivia during lunches Sept. 20-22.
New for this year is lawn painting on Sept. 21 after school on the hill by the Paradise parking lot. Members of each class will paint their class designed logo that represents their McNicholas spirit for this year’s Harry Potter-themed Homecoming. Math teacher Ashley Brothers thought of the idea of lawn painting from her former school for students to express their excitement for Homecoming. “The Lawn Painting really continues to bring the spirit of Homecoming to life,” Brothers said.
Sept. 23 will kick off the Homecoming weekend with Walk Day and the Homecoming Pep Rally, which starts in the gym at 8 a.m. The pep rally includes class competitions in a relay, tug of war, and quidditch match. That night beginning at 6 p.m. is a kickball game between freshmen and sophomores, followed by the annual Powderpuff game between junior and senior girls at 6:45p.m. Beginning at 7:30 p.m. is the Homecoming bonfire, which will also feature a Harry Potter movie. The bonfire and movie event is sponsored by Student Council.
The Homecoming football game will be held on Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. when the Rockets take on the Purcell-Marian Cavaliers in Penn Station Stadium. The dance will follow from 8-11 p.m. in the main gym. Tickets for both events are on sale during lunches. For more information, please visit the McNicholas webpage.
