After posting an impressive regular season record and making a deep playoff run in 2016, the McNicholas Varsity Baseball Team will look to carry last season’s success into 2017.
The team welcomed back nine players including current seniors Zach Arnold, A.J Evans, Tate Ewers, Brian Ford, Evan Jenkins, Brendan Snyder, and Zach Woodke who will all look to lead the team to another GCL title.
“I’m looking forward to how good a young team can be after losing 10 plus seniors last season. Our team goals for this season include winning the GCL and most importantly beating Badin. Personally, I’m looking to improve my hitting skills and will hopefully hit a few home runs before the seasons end,” Ewers said.
The team, coached again by McNick alumnus John Christmann, will travel to Chillicothe, Ohio, to open up the season against Zane Trace High School at 12:30 p.m. on Mar. 25. The team will then return home to face Landmark Christian at 4:30 p.m. on Mar. 30.
During the pursuit of a GCL title, McNicholas must defeat Badin, and senior Brian Ford said the team is out to do just that after having their 2016 season ended in the Regional Semifinals by Badin.
“We are always out to be Badin. They are a good, competitive team for us. After losing to them last year in the Regional Semifinals, we have been looking forward to playing them again,” he said.
“I can’t wait to see some of the younger guys step and help fill some of the spots of the seniors from last year,” he added.
McNicholas will play in the 2017 Skyline Chili Reds Futures High School Showcase on Apr. 1 vs. Bishop Brossart at P&G Cincinnati MLB Urban Youth Academy (Field 3) at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 and include a coupon good for one Free Skyline Chili Cheese Coney, and a voucher for one free ticket to a select Reds game.
