McNicholas softball is currently welcoming new members to join the team for the upcoming spring season. The first scrimmages occur on March 19.
Any McNicholas women considering joining do not have to be particularly experienced in the sport. “We’ll take anybody of any level. We just want to see faces, just want to see people coming out and having a good time,” JV coach and school counselor Matt Wehrman said.
“It’s always a good thing to try something new and see what you can or can’t do,” varsity coach Willy Corbett said. “You might wind up surprising yourself.”
The softball team aspect has already begun developing. “It’s not just you playing alone,” junior softball player Jenah Farrell said about the team. “You have to rely on your teammates. You have to bring them up, not tear them down about little things.”
“Everyone sticks up for each other, cheers each other on, makes fun of each other, makes fun of ourselves, but also [the team] has that competitive side of wanting to win,” Wehrman said of the team aspect. He added, “[The team] is like a goofy family. There’s seriousness but at the same time we have fun.”
Wehrman explained reasons to join the team are “expanding your high school experience, adding some competition to life, joining a new family, and having a lot of fun.”
Softball games occur about every day to every other day, depending on the week. The first JV game will be an away game on March 19 against CNE and the first Varsity game will be March 19 at home against CNE. During the season, open gyms will be Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. and Mondays from 7:30 to 9 p.m., and weight lifting will be on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
To join or to learn more information on the sport, students should contact Wehrman.
“Overall we are going to be a solid team,” Corbett said. “If you’re even thinking about [joining] a little bit, give it a try.”
