The McNicholas Track and Field team met at the track for the first day of 2018 practice on March 5. After a very successful season last year, the team reunited to beat more records and win more races. “I’m excited to get back on the track and see all the people from last year,” senior distant runner Meagan Taylor said. “It has been a while since we were all together, so it’s really fun to reunite and do what we love to do.” McNick Track and Field offers several different categories of events: sprinting, long distance, throwing, long jump, high jump, pole vault, and hurdles.
The track team is led by Coach Cathryn Lest, who graduated from McNick in 2009 and now teaches science. She won State in the 100m dash her freshman year as a student at McNick and claimed another State title the following year for the 200m dash. Lest continues to hold the McNicholas school record for the 100m, running 11.7 seconds, and the 200m, running 24.5 seconds. She attended Hillsdale College after a successful senior season and came back to McNick to become head coach of the track program and specialized coach for sprinting and long jump. The 2018 season will be her 3rd year as head coach.
The team welcomed a new throwing coach, Tiffany Brumberg, to the team for the new season. She attended Wilmington College to throw shot put, discus, and hammer. “I’ve been a swim coach for 10 years, and I love to help the younger generation enjoy each sport,” Brumberg said. “I came to McNick because I know kids through my swim team who go here and they talk about how great of a school it is and how great the sports programs are.” Brumberg is most excited to see how well the throwers do and to see all the different events that come along with track.
The 2018 seniors shared their excitement about the upcoming season and the team bonding. “I hope the team does well throughout the year and really pushes towards the end of the season for districts and regionals,” senior thrower Erica Gumbert said. “There’s some strong potential already, and I hope to see some advance into regionals and maybe even State.” The team is excited to welcome the new freshman and any others that are willing to give Track and Field a shot. Senior Pole Vaulter Thomas More encourages everyone to, “Come support your local McNick Track Team. Stay Rocket-y, Rockets!”
