Get to know the ‘Humans of McNick’ Vol.1: Patrick McHugh

In 2010, Brandon Stanton began Humans of New York as a photography project. Somewhere along the way, he started not only asking for pictures of his subjects but their stories too. This feature series is entirely inspired by Humans of New York. To determine who will be interviewed for this feature, all 500+ students at McNicholas are compiled in a list and then sorted by a randomized generator, which picks the interviewee. For this edition, the “Human of McNick” is junior Patrick McHugh.

Junior Patrick McHugh attended Immaculate Heart of Mary grade school, and as it always seems to happen, not every kid ends up going to the same high-school.

“Back when most of my friends lived in my neighborhood, I saw them a lot more often, and obviously we were less busy back then. We played basketball, football, and video-games. Sometimes we would go to the West Clermont field and play games there. I still see some of them, but a lot of them moved away. A lot of us work and have school and everything and we’re all really busy a lot of the time.” “I like hanging out with my friends and family. A lot of them tell me not to give up on things. When I was thinking about quitting baseball or not, my dad told me to do whatever feels right. I ended up quitting freshman year. I’ve been playing all my life, but then I just got tired of it. I’ve been thinking about coming back every once in a while, but I haven’t played in a while, so I don’t know if I should or not. My dad just keeps telling me to do what feels right. He isn’t pressuring me to go either way. I guess I could say I look up to my dad, we have a lot in common. We both like sports and he’s the one who got me into baseball. I’m really in to the analytical aspect of fantasy football and we talk about that all the time. He always has a lot of faith in everything. If something is going wrong, he always thinks it’s going to get better. He doesn’t ever think negatively. He’s always there for me too. He doesn’t put anything else in front of me or my brother. I want to be like him when I grow up.”
