At the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year, Librarian Mrs. Chelsea Almer, SAIL teacher Ms. Hannah Schwab, and English teachers Mrs. Julie Dill, and Ms. Gretchen Thomas decided to begin a book club just for freshmen. They will act as moderators for the club.
According to Almer, the Freshman Book Club’s goal is to help new freshmen appreciate reading and help get them accustomed to high school. The Club plans on meeting once a month and reading one book every month. Students will be choosing the books and there won’t be focusing on a specific genre, but they would like to promote diversity through the books chosen.
“It’s important to see books as a window to other’s lives. Mrs. Dill, Ms. Schwab, Ms. Thomas, and I agree that books open our eyes to other’s lives that may be different than our own,” Almer said.
Their first meeting is on September 29, from 2:45 to 3:30 P.M. in the Library. The first selection, which was chosen by the moderators, is Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie, a book about freshman Scott Hudson’s struggles with high school life. They also plan on having a month where they listen to an audio book or read an electronic book. Snacks will also be provided at meetings.
Almer said she and the other teachers decided to start the club after Schwab mentioned it in conversation. “Ms. Schwab suggested a special book club just for freshmen, and I thought it was a great idea! It’s a chance for new Rockets to meet new friends, gather with old friends, and talk about books in a fun, casual environment.”
