Combined staff efforts result in personalized and accommodative schedules for McNicholas students

The McNicholas faculty and staff has come together in recent years to develop the most accommodating and enjoyable schedule for the students. With the introduction of new policies and the return of old policies, students can change their schedules to facilitate academic growth.

In a normal school week, students start off with an 8-bell Monday schedule in which they experience 40-minute classes and 15 minutes in C.R.E.W. This allows students to ease into their classes for the week.

“You hit with all of your teachers and they can meet with everybody the same day to tell them what’s upcoming for the week,” Director of Curriculum Mrs. Emily Materna said.

Students then have black days (A, B, C, and D bells) on Tuesdays and Thursdays while green days (E, F, G, and H bells) take place on Wednesdays and Fridays. These classes are 1 hour and 25 minutes with a 15-minute C.R.E.W. On Thursdays, however, C.R.E.W. is 35 minutes which shortens academic classes to 1 hour and 20 minutes.

“C.R.E.W. is longer on Thursdays to kind of help facilitate a bunch of more in-depth activities or even some of the more fun activities,” Counselor Mr. Matt Wehrman said.

8 bells allow students to have the opportunity to choose electives that align with their interests. According to Wehrman, it is common to see students switching electives because of social-based issues, along with a lack of interest.

Another common reason for class switches is the difficulty of the class. Some students may need to move up or down a level in order to feel comfortable with their placement. Students can make these schedule changes by meeting with their designated counselor.

McNicholas counselors provide support and encouragement to all students. Stablum meets with students G-O, Way meets with students A-F, and Wehrman meets with students P-Z.

With the combined efforts of the counseling team and other staff members, McNicholas has been able to offer a variety of different schedules and classes to help students academically, socially, and spiritually thrive.
