The path for students after high school is different for everyone. High school shapes the type of person we become through the type of friends we have, the clubs we participate in, and how involved we are with our school.
In a survey conducted by The McNicholas Milestone, students shared what type of job/career they plan on entering after high school. The answers consisted of predictable answers like doctors, nurses, reporters/journalists, teachers, lawyers, interior designers, marine biologists, and law enforcement, among others. Students explained that they wanted to make a difference or pursue an activity that they really enjoyed spending their free time on and would love to make it their future career. Junior Kennedy Steuer said, “In ten years I would want to be happily married and be a trainer for some pro lacrosse team…because lacrosse is something that makes me happy and it just fits me.”
Not only are students planning for their future jobs, they’re thinking about whether Cincinnati will still be their home or if they will move somewhere new that would be a better fit for them. Out of 45 responses, 40% said that they would be staying in Cincinnati, 51% said they planned on moving somewhere new, and 9% said it depended on where they got a job or if they get an offer from a school outside of Cincinnati for their sport. Sophomore Grace Ernst said, “I want to stay in Cincinnati, so I can still see my family and friends.”
The survey also asked if students were interested in continuing a sport, theatre, or club. These results revealed that 45% of the responding students said they would not be continuing anything after high school, 33% said that they wanted to continue playing a sport after high school at a DI or DII college, and 18% said that they want to continue a club that they are currently in, like ski club, and 4% said they wanted to continue theatre. Other 10-year goals students shared included hoping to become parents, get married, and to travel. Sophomore Conor Flynn said, “I’m not sure what I want to do yet because I want to make sure that whatever I do it’s something that I will actually enjoy.”
