The McNicholas Dance Team is the group responsible for keeping the men’s basketball halftime crowds entertained, adding excitement to pep rallies, and representing the Rockets in competitions.
The Dance Team is the only team in McNick whose season lasts from August to April, but coach Kelly Martin makes sure that they have breaks around exams and on holidays.
Since they spend almost the whole year together, they are practically a family, Martin explained.
“My favorite part about being coach is the privilege to be able to coach all of these young women,” Martin said.
Senior Captain Brittany Taylor has been on the team for two years now, and she explained that during the winter and spring, the team will spend all day at competitions and have multiple other performances.
“I have only been part of the McNick Dance Team for two years, but even though it is hard work, joining the dance team has been one of my best experiences at McNick,” Taylor said.
The co-captains on the team are juniors Felicia Marino and Kate Whitesell, both of whom have been on the team all three of their years at McNick so far.
“My favorite part about being on Dance Team is performing at half time of basketball games, and dancing at peprallies,” Marino said.
Performances outside of McNick events include: The Anderson Township Tree Lighting on Dec. 5, an NKU basketball game on Dec.19, and the team’s new tradition – The Eastside Dance Preview at Anderson High School on Jan.24. They will also compete in JamFest Super Dance Nationals this year. For a complete schedule of the Dance Team’s performances for 2015-2016, click this link.
“I’m particularly proud of this year’s team. They are committed to working together as one team – and they both work and play hard together. I know it will show during competition season,” Martin said.
